This Week's Photos

Laurel Nakadate - Only the Lonely

Photo: Matthew Septimus

The other day I visited MoMA PS1 and saw Laurel Nakadate's Only the Lonely exhibit, which consists of photographs, videos, and feature-length films made over the last ten years. Her latest photographic series, entitled 365 Days: A Catalogue of Tears, made its premiere in the exhibit and documents the photographer weeping daily for a year, beginning January 1, 2010.

I can't say that I fully understood Nakadate's inspiration and point of view but the exhibit clearly touches on "voyeurism, loneliness, the manipulative power of the camera, and the urge to connect with others, through, within, and apart from technology and the media." The entire third floor of the museum was dedicated to Only the Lonely.

Montréal

I visited Montréal a couple of weeks ago, and these are two of my favorite photos I took there.

Photography Exhibition

I know its short notice, but I just got information about an exhibition that goes until March 6. If anyone is closer to South Jersey this exhibition is at the Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown, NJ. They have hours Thursday-Sunday. Some of the work is pretty great.

NEW Low-Light digital camera break-through

Ever tried to take a dramatic, dimly lit picture only to find a grainy mess? When you try to lighten it it photoshop, the colors blow out and you're left with a multicolor disaster. A breakthrough sensor has been developed in Korea that is able to produce high-quality images of places as dark as a movie theater! This innovation opens up a fairly unexplored realm of the subtleties of darkness in photographs. Can't wait to see how photographers utilize this!

Great Printing Place

Hey guys if you couldn't make an appointment for your printings I found a great place for printing 11x14 prints.

It's called Minuteman Press, 35 Scotch Road, Ewing NJ 08628
609 883 0799
800 PRINT 45
minuteweb@minutemanpress.com

They're real nice over there. I think the owner is Ted and Susan handles some parts of the business. I got my five prints on glossy for five dollars today, I don't know if that's the price they're just advertising for now. Maybe if you mention my first name, you probably can also get it at that price.

The prints seem decent to me, we'll see on friday right :)

Take care all

Annie Leibovitz documentary

Looking for photo inspiration?
I just recently watched a wonderfully entertaining documentary on one of the most famous photographers of our time, Annie Leibovitz. If you are at all culturally aware, you have most likely seen at least one of her photos. She is most well known for photographing famous people. Almost every major star has been photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Her most recent work is her fairy tale series, but her work goes WAY back to her early days photographing bands such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones and many more. She photographed John Lennon just hours before he was killed!

The entire movie is on YouTube! Here is part 1:

1x

Today I found this website called 1x.com. Here they "take the work of the most talented photobloggers, various famous photogoraphers, and many serious amateurs, select their best work and collect it all in one place".

They also have set up their site so you can stumble through the photos displayed on their site by clicking the "Stumble1x" button in their banner. I've been clicking through their site for at least an hour now. Here are just a few examples of some of the amazing work I've seen so far:

Paint Sound Sculptures

This is an interesting take on painting with sound. Put drops of paint on top of a reverberating speaker and watch sculptures as they're made with high speed cameras.

Photo Sculptures

I was clicking link to link to different photography pages and stumbled upon a woman name Letha Wilson whose photo sculptures immediately caught my attention. I have seen a lot of art but I can not recall anything that looks like some of her pieces. My personal favorite is 'Sunset'.

Future of Photography...if this really works

Canon unveiled their plan for the future of photography at the World Expo 2010, where you can use photography stills, zoom in all the way with really clear stuff, from video! Like really very high definition video. Basically it's photography from video.

Celebrity Photographers

I absolutely love Celebrity Photography. I think it's great how these photographers portray the same people in different ways. From expressive and fashion to rugged and raw, I love them all. I thought I would just share a few to express how different they really are.

For example Lindsay Lohan shot by different photographers:
